Prototype
Design
A simulation of the planned end product, created before the real product is produced.
Purpose
- Conduct user tests
- Demonstrate the product to stakeholders
- Communicate UI behavior to development team
Formats
- "Paper Prototypes" are paper print outs or sketches, that allow a linear walk-through of UI tasks. (Used to demonstrate or test planned scenarios)
- "Clickthroughs" are simple on-screen prototypes, often PDF, HTML or PowerPoint, that allow a linear click-through of UI tasks. (Used to demonstrate or test planned scenarios)
- "Interactive Prototypes" are sophisticated on-screen prototypes, often Adobe Flash or Flex, that allow everyone to see and use the design team's intent. (Used to fully demonstrate or test a product, regardless of the order of tasks)
